The millions of packages delivered by TNT Express worldwide will get a little greener with the help of the company’s Australia branch. TNT Express Australia has announced the purchase of ten gas-electric hybrid trucks produced by Hino for use during daily deliveries. The company is investing in testing facilities and equipment to keep track of the carbon dioxide emissions produced by each of these hybrid trucks.

Officials from TNT Express Australia have released tests that show the environmental benefits of the Hino hybrid trucks. These tests revealed 14 percent less carbon dioxide produced by Hino trucks than TNT’s traditional delivery vehicles. The average emission reduction for each hybrid truck each year could amount to 1600 kilograms of carbon dioxide. An additional benefit is the elimination of half the nitrogen oxide emissions by the company’s new hybrid trucks. It is easy to extrapolate other benefits for TNT Express Australia’s investment including the reduction of monthly fuel costs and increased public esteem.

Hino is a subsidiary owned by Toyota that produces commercial trucks for parcel delivery companies, movers and other industries. The initial hybrid model produced by Hino was the Dutro that was constructed in November 2003 and tested in 2004. TNT Express has invested in an updated version of the Dutro that was released in 2006.

The hybrid trucks that have been included in TNT Express Australia’s fleet switch to electrical power during braking and stopping. The 4.0-liter diesel engine produces 134 horsepower in situations experienced by delivery drivers including highway driving and poor weather conditions. The diesel engine is supplemented by a 23 kW motor as well as a six-speed transmission that allows the TNT Express drivers to switch gears for greater fuel efficiency.

TNT Express Australia is starting a trend by delivery companies toward moderation in fuel consumption. The continued use of a diesel engine component means that the delivery company can maintain favorable relationships with fuel providers while getting better gas mileage. The remaining TNT Express branches will need to invest in hybrid diesel trucks if the company wants to have an impact on their bottom line and reputation.
