Oxford University’s Smith School of Enterprise and the Environment issued a report last week entitled “The Future of Mobility Roadmap.” The highlight of this report is that changing weight, length and designs of new vehicles can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By creating lighter and more aerodynamic vehicles, drivers produce fewer emissions by not placing high strains on gas engines and hybrid systems. These changes in vehicle design would also reduce fuel consumption by allowing drive systems ...

The Department of Energy is using $777 million from its annual budget and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to invest in alternative energy research through 2013. Secretary Steven Chu officially released the list of 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) that will receive research grants as part of this initiative. The DOE plans to supply funds in full to 16 EFRCs and spread ...

New York-based Ener1 Inc. will work with Volvo to manufacture PHEV demonstration versions of the automaker’s V70 wagon. Ener1’s lithium-ion batteries will be placed within Volvo PHEV systems for a duo of demonstration vehicles about to hit European roads this summer. Swedish utility Vattenfall is helping Volvo finance the battery purchase as well as the costs of running these tests over the next three years. The long-term goal for Volvo, Vattenfall and Ener1 is to get PHEVs on the road by 2012.

The familiar white box trucks that deliver packages and letters for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will get greener over the next five years. The federal government’s General Services Administration (GSA) recently purchased 6,500 replacement vehicles in an effort to remove old USPS trucks from the road. The USPS plans to add 1,000 E-85 trucks, 900 gas/electric hybrid trucks and 4,600 fuel-efficient gas trucks to its fleet by 2014. By simply swapping 6,500 gas-guzzling trucks for more efficient models, the USPS is taking huge leaps toward a cleaner ...

Swedish truck manufacturer Scania AB announced last week that Stockholm’s Busslink has purchased 85 buses powered by ethanol. Busslink is the operator for Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL), which is Stockholm’s public transit system. SL is getting ahead on its vow to purchase buses and vehicles powered only by renewable fuels starting in 2010. Scania’s buses will be split between northern and southern Stockholm routes with the fleet split in half between city and commuter routes.

Scania AB will deliver 85 units of its ...

The U.S. Department of Energy, the Canadian government and General Motors started the EcoCar: The NeXt Challenge competition earlier this year as a challenge to future auto engineers. This competition tasks 17 groups of university students throughout North America with turning the 2009 Saturn VUE into an emissions-neutral, fuel-efficient vehicle. Each group must keep the redesigned VUE as close to the original design and performance level as possible while using common elements like lithium-ion batteries, plug-in platforms and renewable ...

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has been busy in the last two years partnering with utilities in Japan, Denmark, France, Monaco and other countries to create an EV infrastructure. Nissan is making inroads into the American market with its recent commitment to an EV rollout in Tucson, Arizona. Nissan is collaborating with ECOtality and the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) to pave the way for electrical vehicles in the region by 2012.

The Pima Association of Governments (PAG) is a non-profit association representing ...

Brazilian businesses and government agencies may be running on ethanol rather than gasoline if collaboration between Orbital Corporation Limited and Sygma Motors-Egneharia Industria E Comercio de Motors Ltda of Brazil comes to fruition. Orbital Corporation, an Australian engineering firm, is working with Brazilian-based Sygma Motors to produce flex-fuel engines for Vale Solutions in Energy (VSE). Sygma will work ...

What is the fuel of the future? With petroleum finally on the way out there are a myriad of alternative fuels vying to take its place. Among there are perhaps the top three competitors for most available, and most sustainable source, consisting of ethanol, vegetable oil, or compressed natural gas. Let’s look at each individually.

Ethanol has a reputation already for providing a cleaner alternative to petroleum-based fuels, but as of yet is not approved for 100% pure use in mainstream automobiles. In most cases gasoline is supplemented with ethanol, at east ...

The Washington Auto Show featured a presentation by 17 teams of engineering students participating in the EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge program. This program is funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), the California Air Resources Board (CARB), GM and other participants to find the next generation of green vehicle designs. EcoCAR teams have three years to design, implement and test electric vehicle (EV) prototypes including all-electric and plug-in models. The Washington presentation last week was a single step ...
