The Environmental Protection Agency’s recent announcement of an increased Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) for 2009 shows the federal government’s commitment to biofuels. The 2009 RFS features a 23% increase over the 2008 standard, requiring the production of 11.1 billion gallons of renewable fuels. This minimum production standard will include 500 million gallons of biodiesel. The latest draft of the 2009 RFS is a 10.2% increase over the first version of the standard. The Environmental Protection Agency defines flex-fuel vehicles as cars, trucks and SUVs designed to “run on gasoline or a blend of up to 85% ethanol.” As American and foreign automakers turn high-selling models into flex-fuel options, consumers around the world are benefiting in several ways. The primary advantage of flexible fuel vehicles is the ability to travel anywhere on gasoline or ethanol. The newly completed I-85 corridor into the Southeast allows a flex-fuel driver to use E-85 exclusively but ...

The Illinois Corn Marketing Board (ICMB) has funded a report entitled “The Potential Role for Corn Ethanol in Meeting the Energy Needs of the United States in 2016-2030” to dig corn ethanol from the news trash heap. The report’s executive statement notes a concern by corn growers and ethanol proponents that corn ethanol has become “old news” with the rise of cellulosic ethanol. Economist Ross Korves and a group of farm experts wrote the report on behalf of the farm lobby group. ...

While automakers are slowly coming around to alternative fuels, hundreds of companies are jumping into the alternative fuel niche with conversion kits. These kits allow consumers to turn their gas-guzzling vehicles into testaments to sustainable fuels. You should examine alternative fuels like ethanol, propane and vegetable oil carefully before pursuing conversion kits.

Flex Fuel US and other innovative businesses have created conversion kits to take advantage of America’s ethanol craze. Flex Fuel’s conversion kit ...

The European Parliament has been busy lately negotiating new standards for fuel emissions on the continent. The body’s Industry Committee was focused this past week on determining the right amount of transport fuel that needed to be renewable within the next decade. The Industry Committee signed off on a report that requested a 10% share of the European Union’s fuel sources be taken from renewable sources by 2020. While the report on its face seems like a moderate step toward sustainable transportation, a closer look reveals a push toward cleaner ...

Researchers at IBM’s Institute for Business Value went straight to the source to determine the trajectory of hybrid vehicles in the global automotive market. These researchers spoke with 125 executives throughout the world including executives from the top 10 selling automotive brands to determine the future of sustainable transportation. The primary finding of these interviews was that most auto executives anticipate that every new car, truck and SUV offered in 2020 will feature some form of hybrid power. The report entitled “Automotive ...

The main concern of legislators, farmers and families about ethanol subsidies around the world is the accompanying rise in prices. Many observers are concerned that increasingly large percentages of crop yields given to fuel instead of food production will negate savings at the pump for ethanol-enriched fuels. Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Poet Energy has recently received funding from the Department of Energy to solve this problem by using corncobs and kernel fibers for ethanol production. Poet Energy has undertaken ...

Former Formula One designer Gordon Murray has thrown his considerable expertise behind a diminutive car called the T.25. This vehicle’s main feature is its smaller frame than the smart fortwo that allows a driver to park bumper first into a street parking space. Gordon Murray Design has touted the fact that three T.25 cars will be able to fit into a traditional space on a city street. The first prototype of this community vehicle will be produced in 2009 with wider distribution in Asia and Europe thereafter. Murray’s ...
