Yellow Cab Chicago signed a 10-year contract last week to receive compressed natural gas (CNG) and fueling equipment from Clean Energy Fuels Corp. The cab company wants to immediately incorporate 100 CNG taxis into a fleet of 3,000 taxis running under Yellow Cab subsidiaries like Yellow and Checker. CNG taxis in Chicago will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also decrease fuel costs in the long term.

Automakers will get 17 million natural gas vehicles (NGVs) on the road by 2015 according to a study by Pike Research. The research firm calculated its estimate based on a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5% with a global inventory of 9.7 million units in 2008. India was determined by Pike Research to be the highest growth area with a CAGR of 18.7%. The NGV market envisioned in this report will be dominated by emerging economies like Argentina and Brazil along with Iran and Pakistan.

The familiar white box trucks that deliver packages and letters for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) will get greener over the next five years. The federal government’s General Services Administration (GSA) recently purchased 6,500 replacement vehicles in an effort to remove old USPS trucks from the road. Telecommunications giant AT&T has committed $565 million to add 15,000 alternative fuel trucks, vans and cars to its fleet by 2019. AT&T plans to add 8,000 CNG-powered vans with $350 million and used $215 million to  replace 7,000 company cars and trucks with hybrids. Auto development firm MBtech debuted a demonstrator model for a natural gas sports car at the Innovationsschau Erdgas presented by TUV Rheinland on April 29th. This event allowed industry experts to view demonstrators, study findings and prototypes of machinery powered by natural gas. The alternative fuel agendas of fuel provider PetroCard and waste disposal giant Waste Management collided this past week. The corporate duo opened a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station called Clean N’ Green Fuel in South Seattle.
