The 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) proved to be a big event for Toyota. The automaker has appeared stagnant as it has shoved all of its chips into the Prius in recent years. The Japanese automaker used the 2010 NAIAS to lay out the future of its green vehicle fleet. Toyota stated that it will have battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) on the road by 2012 and fuel cell vehicles ready by 2015.

Toyota Industries Corporation (TIC) has been developing electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) since the mid-1990s. TIC premiered the latest version of its EVSE technology at the Tokyo Motor Show in November. In addition to using EVSEs as stand-alone chargers, the machine company is also unveiling electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout the Aichi Prefecture in central Japan. Visitors to the recent Los Angeles Auto Show were treated to the North American debut of Toyota’s 2010 Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The Idaho National Laboratory and the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois conduct PHEV testing as part of the Department of Energy’s Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity (AVTA). Both laboratories and their public and private partners recently celebrated 1 million miles of PHEV road testing. Toyota sought to connect itself with the environmental movement with its Surfrider Camry Hybrid CNG at the 2009 SEMA Show. Visitors to the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas saw a Toyota Camry equipped with a compressed natural gas (CNG) system from Metal Crafters. Toyota is using its Lexus HS 250h as the basis for a compact luxury hybrid called the Sai. The Toyota Sai will make its debut in Japanese showrooms on December 7, 2009 with a limited rollout in the first quarter of 2010. Toyota states that it has an initial sales goal of 3,000 units per month before an expanded rollout will be considered. The Sai may be focused on the luxury market in Japan but Toyota’s use of efficient drive components can be replicated in other market niches.

Toyota Motor made efforts last week to shore up its reputation as a leader in green vehicles by unveiling its plan for EV and fuel cell mass production in the United States. President Akio Toyoda announced plans to produce electric vehicles in the United States by 2012 with a first production run of electric vehicles by 2015. Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu has marketed mini-cars and light trucks in the Pacific Rim and South America for several decades. Daihatsu is bridging its past with its future at the Tokyo Motor Show with a 15 vehicle presentation. The Japanese automaker will display nine production models during the show including the Mira hatchback and the YPV four-door sedan. Toyota is using the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show as a sounding board for several clean-vehicle concepts. The automaker’s most interesting concept is the FT-EV II, which builds on the original FT-EV shown at the North American International Auto Show this January.
