The Volkswagen Touareg has been a favorite among soccer moms and SUV fans since its introduction in 2002. This popular SUV has been given the hybrid treatment with Volkswagen presenting the Touareg Hybrid at Munich’s Postpalast last week. Volkswagen is looking beyond its upcoming release of the Touareg hybrid SUV with the New Compact Coupe (NCC) hybrid. The NCC hybrid concept was unveiled last week at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. As the Touareg hybrid hits streets by summer 2010, Volkswagen will incorporate elements of the NCC into future hybrid models. Volkswagen trotted out a concept car capable of traveling on one liter per 100 kilometers or 235 miles per gallon back in 2002. The German automaker scrapped the project in 2005 but the second-generation L1 started on the comeback trail in 2007. The 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show was the coming-out party for the newest version of the Volkswagen L1, a diminutive concept car with potential as a production vehicle in the next decade. Volkswagen is showing its distinct approach to all-electric mobility with the E-Up! EV Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The E-Up! Is a four-seat coupe with a 60kW electric motor and 18kWh lithium-ion battery for a fully electric ride. Volkswagen included the Kickstep folding scooter, the Microbully scooter and a folding bike in the E-Up! to accommodate inner city travel. The sluggish progress of Volkswagen’s hybrid and clean-fuel vehicles has left the automaker in the dust of European automakers like Renault and Volvo. Volkswagen is hoping to catch up to the pack by working with one of China’s largest automaker, BYD Auto, on a battery supply agreement. The tentative pact with BYD Auto comes on the heels of agreements by Sanyo and Toshiba to supply batteries to Volkswagen. The limits of hydrogen-fueled transportation have been tested this past week during the Hydrogen Road Tour 2009. On May 26, a fleet of 12 hydrogen-powered cars and trucks left the U.S. Olympics Training Center in Chula Vista, California on its way to Vancouver. Volkswagen brought a trio of fuel-cell prototypes to the recent Los Angeles Auto Show to show their research into hydrogen fuel systems. These three fuel-cell vehicles produce zero emissions and were available for writers, industry experts and other attendees to test drive.
