As the Frankfurt Motor Show approaches, automakers worldwide are scrambling to release information on models featured at the show. Frankfurt will be the launching pad for BMW’s latest vehicle, the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition. BMW is making waves ahead of the Frankfurt event by stating that it will price the EfficientDynamics Edition of the 320d the same as the traditional model. If this version of the 320d lives up to the hype, it would become the most eco-friendly model in the BMW family.

The 320d EfficientDynamics Edition is powered by a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter diesel engine capable of producing 163 horsepower. BMW dipped into its collection of fuel-saving features to make the 320d more miserly at the gas station. The Auto Start Stop function eliminates wasted fuel by turning off engines at full stops. The Brake Energy Restoration feature gathers energy produced from the friction of brake pads to produce supplementary power for the battery. The Electric Power Steering draws power from the electric motor during sharp turns to reduce fuel mileage even further. BMW added a new wrinkle to the EfficientDynamic Edition called Aero wheel rims, which reduce drag from the wheel wells and rims at high speeds.

BMW did not shirk its tradition of high-performance vehicles when designing the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition. The EfficientDynamics Edition features a top speed of 137 miles per hour and 0-60 miles per hour time of 8.2 seconds. BMW touts a 57.4 miles per gallon fuel efficiency rating for the EfficientDynamics Edition, which would put this sedan past the Toyota Prius in terms of fuel mileage. If this model is able to perform at peak efficiency in pre-production tests, it will meet European Union standards for carbon dioxide emissions.

BMW’s presentation of the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition at Frankfurt comes ahead of a large-scale rollout in Europe. This model will be released in Spain, France, Italy and Germany in the near future as BMW tries to capitalize on existing markets. The EfficientDynamics Edition shows that BMW is trying to blend the best of the luxury and fuel-efficient car worlds. While this model will likely perform lower than the pre-release projections, BMW is using advanced auto technology to create high-mileage, low-emissions vehicles without getting away from its diesel roots.
