Ford is filtering its renewed interest in green vehicles through subsidiary companies like Lincoln. This high-end auto brand is taking Ford’s hybrid evolution to the next level with the 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid. The MKZ Hybrid is set to be released in the United States this fall and Ford used the New York International Auto Show to create buzz for its latest hybrid. This latest entrant in the Ford family of vehicles fits into the goal of adding five new hybrid and electric vehicles by 2013.
The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid features a Ford hybrid drive system built from a 2.5-liter hybrid engine and an electric motor capable of producing 191 horsepower. Ford claims that its second version of the hybrid system can achieve fuel mileage ratings up to 41 miles per gallon. The MKZ Hybrid is also capable of traveling on all-electric power over short distances at speeds up to 47 miles per hour. Ford says that this midsize sedan will be a leader in fuel economy within the premium sedan market once it hits dealerships in September.
Ford has been toying with smart drive features like the SmartGauge with EcoGuide in earlier hybrid prototypes and concepts. The 2011 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid goes beyond these early versions with an interactive SmartGauge system. Drivers who engage in fuel-efficient acceleration, braking and steering see flowers spring up on their performance monitor. The SmartGauge screen can be switched between multiple modes depending on the driver’s information needs. The Inform screen offers basic information on fuel and battery power levels that are common to every vehicle. The Enlighten mode layers information on hybrid system performance on top of the Inform screen. Drivers can also increase power to the wheels and auxiliary systems by switching to the Empower mode.
Ford’s goal of five new hybrids and electric vehicles by 2013 seems to be progressing along well. Aside from introducing fuel-efficient vehicles, Ford is also extending its reach from entry-level sedans to commercial vehicles. The Transit Connect Electric, the Focus Electric and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid hit different markets using Ford’s latest hybrid technology. As we head toward the 2011 model year, it will be interesting to see how the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid fares against other hybrids on the market.
