Indian automaker Maruti Suzuki unveiled plans for CNG-powered vehicles to be produced by the first quarter of 2011. The nation’s biggest automaker has developed the intelligent-Gas Port Injection (i-GPI) system with the help of majority stakeholder Suzuki Motor Corporation. This CNG drive system will be used in new versions of five existing models ranging from the budget-priced Alto to the premium SX4. Maruti Suzuki notes that the i-GPI as well as smarter body designs could decrease operating costs by 60% per vehicle.
The i-GPI system utilizes an engine control unit (ECU) that controls CNG delivery to each cylinder. The ECU adjusts gas distribution based on driver tendencies as well as road conditions. Every cylinder is joined by an individual injector to ensure greater fuel efficiency. Maruti Suzuki notes that it has conducted more than 3,000 hours of road testing prior to the announcement. This CNG system will be incorporated into the Alto hatchback, Estilo wagon, SX4 sedan, Wagon-R microvan and Eeco van.
The primary concern for Indian consumers in the market for a cleaner vehicle is cost. Maruti Suzuki offered pricing on i-GPI models at a press conference to ease these concerns. The budget-priced Alto Lxi will be available for 323,000 rupees or $6,900. The SX4 Vxi sits at the high end of i-GPI pricing with an MSRP of 747,000 rupees or $16,000. The automaker also noted that maintenance and repairs for CNG-powered models will be available at 2,700 service stations throughout India. Maruti Suzuk is also collaborating with officials in Mumbai, Delhi and Gujrat to meet demand for CNG fueling stations.
Maruti Suzuki’s turn to CNG power is part of a larger strategy to reduce its impact on the environment. The automaker has also introduced the End of Life Vehicle (ELV) program to address the issue of harmful production processes. This initiative has eliminated the use of lead, chromium and other hazardous materials during vehicle production and finishing. The ELV program was designed to prevent old and disabled vehicles from harming the environment when they reach scrap yards. The impacts of the i-GPI and the ELV program are enhanced by the automaker’s national reach. Maruti Suzuki could have significant effects on greenhouse gas emissions and fuel demand in India with a diverse fleet of CNG vehicles.
