The Diesel 3008 Hybrid4 by Peugeot will be the first hybrid diesel car to hit the market in 2011. The automaker primed the pump for the upcoming release last week with details about the vehicle. This hybrid diesel crossover is projected to get 62 miles per gallon while reducing emissions significantly. Peugeot is going to produce the Diesel 3008 Hybrid4 for European consumers at factories in Sochaux and Mulhouse.
The drive system includes a 2.0-liter HDi diesel engine with a maximum output of 120kW. The 27kW electric motor draws power from two batteries including an advanced NiMH battery pack. Drivers will be able to squeeze more power out of the drive train using a six-speed manual transmission. Peugeot designed the drive system so that front wheel drive is powered by diesel and rear wheel drive by electricity. The stop-start system shuts down the engine at full stops and uses electrical power to restart the car during acceleration. The Diesel 3008 Hybrid4 also uses an energy recuperation system to recharge batteries with brake energy.
An intriguing feature in the Diesel 3008 Hybrid4 is the multi-mode drive option. This function allows drivers to select driving modes to fit their particular styles. The Auto mode alternates between the diesel engine and electric motor depending on road conditions. The ZEV mode uses the electric motor and battery packs to offer zero emissions travel. Drivers can squeeze more power out of this hybrid using the Four-Wheel Drive mode. The Sport mode opts for higher engine outputs and swift gear changes rather than fuel efficiency. The multi-mode drive system is made possible with Peugeot’s Power Train Management Unit.
This innovative crossover does not eschew style and interior comforts for fuel efficiency. Peugeot has included an ergonomic control panel with a seven-inch video display in the final design. The glass roof allows passengers to get panoramic views of the sky without leaving their seats. The Diesel 3008 Hybrid4 will also feature storage nooks for personal items and small bags throughout the cockpit. Peugeot could not have created a production vehicle like the Diesel 3008 Hybrid4 without assistance from parts manufacturers. The French automaker worked with Bosch and Sanyo to integrate the electric motor, diesel engine and battery packs.
